When U.S. soldiers from Texas reached the gates of the Dachau concentration camp, they were not prepared for the human misery, terror, torture, and depravity they were about to discover. Although they were hailed as liberators by the captives, what the soldiers found haunted many of them for the rest of their lives.
The term Holocaust refers to the systematic, state-authorized extermination of the Jewish people and other “undesirables” by the Nazi regime that resulted in ghettoization, forced labor, and ultimately genocide. The Nazis constructed camps to exterminate perceived “enemies of the state:” concentration camps as detention centers for political and ideological opponents, forced labor and prisoner-of-war camps to incarcerate rival soldiers, and killing centers or extermination camps designed to murder the Jewish people on a massive scale.
